Hello Cary
I have been reading the article on backyard
fish farming and find it very interesting. I have just moved to Abu
Dhabi from England for work and would like to attempt to give it a go.
I have two daughters 6 and 2 and would like to start this
project with them. I believe it would be a great education for them to learn
about how and where we get our foods.
I wonder if you can offer me any advice on how I would be able
to do this and what type of fish would I use.
It would be pretty straight forward to get a pool, but would I
need a sun dome as the temperatures are up in the 30's in winter and mid 40's
in summer?
I look forward to hearing from you
Regards Paul
Dear Paul, Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but I've been down with a fair to midland case of the "Summertime flue" lately, and haven't downloaded any email for over a week. As of this writing (09/25/09) I do believe we have a total of 2 backyard fish production web pages inside of our "Survival Foods" section of this site. I do not know why people keep missing it, but if you'd take a look just past the title and author of each of these 2 aquaculture articles, you'd see that both of these articles originated from a 35+ year old issue from the old "digest sized" "Organic Gardener & Farming" magazine. Kurt or I have never dabbled in back yard aquaculture ourselves. But when I ran across these articles in Kurt's collection of OGF back issues, they were so straight forward and to the point that I couldn't help but to scan and publish them to the web. If I were to take a crack at growing fish in my backyard for a personal food supply, I believe my first choice would be "tilapia". If you decide to go with tilapia as a family protein supplement, I strongly suggest that you get in contact with a man by the name of Mike T. Sipe. If Mr. Sipe isn't the world's foremost authority on this species, he knows as much if not more than any other person in North America on the subject. You can get to Mike's site by clicking on the the text link found in this paragraph. My second choice for back yard fish farming would be the venerable old "channel catfish". If for some reason you missed it, please read "Raising Catfish In A Barrel". I get more compliments and positive feedback on this single web page than I do on any other "non-Kurt Saxon" related page found on this site. As to the rest of your email, I'd just go to my favorite search engine and type in the following search word/s &/or phrases to get at the rest of the data you're interested in: "aquaculture", "fish farming", "catfish farming" and "solar geodesic domes". Each of these links will take you to the first page of a North American Google search. They've also been written to open up into their own window. So after you've searched each subject as thoroughly as needed, and have bookmarked all the pertinent websites on the subject, just close that window/tab to come back here and click on your next search parameter. Paul I hope this reply to your email was of some help and I'd like to thank you very much for your inquiry. All The Best To You & Yours,
